Schematic Design

Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, 9 am-3 pm (1 session) Fee: $175

An analysis and discussion of the components of the schematic design division.

Topics covered include building massing, orientation, relationship of spaces and their associated activities together with basic code requirements. An example of the two required vignettes will be analyzed and discussed. Computer demonstration techniques will be presented. Lunch is included.

The class will simulate two vignettes: Interior Layout and Building Layout. The course will focus on how to analyze the exam problems and will emphasize solving the problem. Candidates will sketch their solution using paper and pencil and should bring sketch paper, pencils, tape, etc. to complete the given problems. Computer presentation will NOT be a part of this course.

A 5 hour simulated exam (paper and pencil) of the scope and content to be offered in the

NCARB Schematic Design division and includes various tasks that may be encountered on the actual exam. Candidates will sketch their solution using paper and pencil and should bring sketch paper, pencils, tape, etc. to complete the given problems. There will be a group discussion of the problems with an analysis of a sample solution before criticism of each candidate’s solution. Computer presentation will NOT be a part of this course.

This course analyzes and interprets the AIA documents as references for the ARE®, the rules of professional conduct, standards and procedures of practice, field tests, project administration, construction cost accounting, supervision and management of construction documents. Comprehensive coverage of the various systems that make up the mechanical equipment of buildings including codes and environmental issues. Course content focuses on plumbing, HVAC, electrical and lighting systems together with specialty items such as acoustics, conveying systems and fire detection and suppression systems. One session will cover the Mechanical and Electrical Plan Graphic Problem.

History of Architecture

This course focuses on an overview of the History of Architecture and the variety of questioning methodologies as it would pertain to the ARE®. The course uniquely emphasizes a range of historical topics that are covered within ALL ARE® sections as a result of the exams distribution of historical question typologies throughout each section. Salient architectural features of different historical periods ranging from the primitive to the present day will be discussed.

A 3 hour simulated exam (paper and pencil) of the scope and content to be offered in the NCARB Site Planning and Design division and includes two graphic problems and a 65 question multiple choice exam. Candidates will sketch their solution using paper and pencil and should bring sketch paper, pencils, tape, etc. to complete the given problems. There will be a group discussion of the multiple choice questions and the vignettes with an analysis of a sample solution before criticism of each candidate’s solution. Computer presentation will NOT be a part of this course.

Structural Systems

Tuesdays, Sept. 13 - Dec. 27, 2011, 6:15-9:00 pm (16 sessions) Fee: $750

A systematic review of structural design beginning with simplified mechanics and strength of materials and proceeding through wood, steel and concrete structures.

The design and computation of such structural components as footings, beams, columns, girders and trusses with shortcut methods will be analyzed. Common formulas are reviewed and proper use of various manuals is shown. Also covered are the effects of wind, lateral and seismic forces in the practical and theoretical design of a structure. One session will cover the Structural Layout Graphic Problem.

Early registration is recommended. Last minute on site registration is not encouraged and is subject to space availability. The full fee must accompany your registration form. Payment may be made by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover), personal check, bank check or money order payable to Institute of Design and Construction.

To register by mail, send entire 8 -1/2 x 11 panel with your payment to IDC, 141 Willoughby Street , Brooklyn , NY 11201 . Use one registration form per person. To register in person: IDC is open Monday to Thursday 9 am to 7 pm and 9 am to 5 pm Friday, 10 am
to 12 pm Saturdays (except July and August).

To register by fax: You may send your registration by fax pending arrival of your check which must be received prior to the starting date of the class. If you register by fax, you may pay for the class either prior to, or on the day of, the first session with either credit card, check or cash. All classes must be paid in full prior to attending the class.

Confirmations will be sent out within 2 days of receipt. The Institute reserves the right to withdraw any course due to insufficient enrollment. A full refund will be made for any amount paid toward a course that IDC withdraws.
